A rule-based checklist: baseline entry, clothing, fuel and logistics sections are always included; trail adds navigation and emergency items; hot, cold and rain add weather-specific items; over-6h adds long-race items; travel adds travel items. No prediction or scoring is produced.
  • The checklist is general preparation support, not a race's mandatory kit list.
  • Organiser rules, route briefing and medical advice take precedence.
  • A checked item means remembered, not tested or guaranteed.
  • The tool does not store or upload personal data.
No numerical rounding; the output is a structured checklist.

Ten Essentials

The NPS minimum kit includes navigation, sun protection, clothing, illumination, first aid, fire, repair kit, food, water and water-treatment supplies, and shelter. Navigation means a map, compass and GPS; a physical map should back up electronic tools. A headlamp with spare batteries is recommended, and someone should know the route and expected return time.

Hike Smart

Leave a trip plan with a trusted person including route, contacts, arrival and return times, and companions. Mobile coverage may be absent; consider a locator beacon and conserve battery. Check the weather, prepare for lightning and flash flooding, and keep a Plan B.

Heat Cramps, Exhaustion, Stroke

Heat exhaustion can cause heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, headache and fainting. Heat stroke is an emergency with confusion, slurred speech, very high body temperature, rapid pulse and possible loss of consciousness. Heat stroke requires emergency services; call emergency services first and cool the person while waiting.

Winter Hiking Tips

Winter conditions require layers of clothing, warm outer layers, sunglasses, sunscreen, water and snacks. Traction devices are recommended on ice and snow, and snowshoes or traction devices are often needed. Do not rely on cell phones; carry a map and compass or GPS and know how to use them. Check the weather and trail conditions, tell someone your plans and expected return time, and be willing to turn around. Snow-covered landscapes can hide trail markers; do not rely on other people's tracks.
